Let me try it myself.

A child carries a tray, sets it down and begins. If water spills, a cloth is within reach. Everyday activities give young children opportunities to coordinate their movements, keep trying and experience the satisfaction of doing something for themselves.

Ages 2½–6

A child polishes a small brass vessel at a low wooden table.

Small tasks with a purpose

Pouring water and polishing a plate involve a beginning, a sequence and a finish. Repeating the activity gives a child another chance to practise. Low tables and accessible shelves help children reach the things they need.

Finding words to join in

Naming an object, asking for help and telling someone what happened give language a purpose. Listening and conversation belong alongside stories and early experiences with sounds and words.

Becoming part of the group

Learning to wait for a material, make space for another child and return something to its place brings other people into the picture. Independence grows alongside learning how to share a room.

Starting school together

A first day at school is a change for parents too. Tell us about your child’s routines, previous experiences of separation and what helps them feel comfortable. Bring your questions about drop-off, toilet learning and the first few days.
